“Gogotte” is the name given to these naturally shaped minerals and are exclusively found in Fontainebleau, France in a specifc formation which is 34 - 28 million years old (Oligocene Period).
AN INTRODUCTION TO GOGOTTE

Gogottes are natural formations resulting from the deposition of sands in Northern France during the Oligocene Period, around 32 million years ago. During this time, silica-rich groundwater permeated the sands, giving rise to intricate, swirling organic shapes and solidifying the sand into dynamic forms.
This geological process occurred during two cold periods of the Quaternary, one occurring 300,000 years ago and the other between 50,000 and 30,000 years ago. -
Comprising predominantly of silica, and therefore identical in composition to that of quartz, gogottes are predominantly white or slightly grey. Occasionally, they exhibit hues of red or brown due to iron oxides, and black spots may emerge from manganese oxides.
Louis XIV esteemed gogottes, and their scientific exploration commenced a century later. These captivating formations have served as a wellspring of inspiration for numerous artists and have become sought-after items at auctions globally.
INTERESTING FACTS
Louis XIV of France, known as the Sun King, commissioned similar gogottes to be excavated for his gardens. The ornately rounded, scrolling formations—somewhat Baroque in design—have been restored to their original state surrounding the mysterious Grove of the Three Fountains designed by Le Nôtre in 1677.
